Equipment for pottery. Behind the potter's wheel. Video: pottery workshop from the inside

Clay souvenirs are always in great demand. In addition, products that imitate antique kitchen utensils made of clay have recently become fashionable. To be engaged in the production of such products, it is necessary to master this ancient craft perfectly. You will learn how to turn pottery for beginners into a profitable promising business from this article.

Education

Beginners often wonder where to learn pottery in order to gain the necessary skills and knowledge. Useful information can be gleaned from books and other specialized literature. In addition, many sites on the Internet have free video pottery lessons for beginners.

The easiest and at the same time effective way to help you quickly master this craft is to learn from a master. Such lessons will cost you about 1 thousand rubles for 1 hour of classes. But this is the best way to learn, which will allow you to learn the production process from the inside. For 2 months of classes in special courses, you will pay 10-15 thousand rubles. After completing such courses, it is hardly possible to become a master. But, nevertheless, you will be well versed in pottery.

In principle, even those people who have never encountered pottery can open such a business. It is enough to understand the technology for the production of ceramic products, draw up a business plan for a pottery workshop and hire several experienced craftsmen. If you manage to properly organize this business, it will develop successfully and bring you excellent profits.

Many beginners doubt, ? If you want to get financial independence, try, experiment and you will definitely succeed. A crisis is the best time to start a new business, so cast aside all doubts and get to work.

Business registration

Before you start pottery, you need to register an IP. Such activities fall under OKVED 26.21. This category allows you to engage in the production of various ceramic products, ranging from souvenirs to household products. If you also plan to make clay toys, you need to add the OKVED code 36.50. To reduce taxes and insurance payments, it is better to choose a simplified taxation system.

Workshop space and equipment

After you complete all the necessary documents, you can proceed directly to the organization of the pottery workshop. First of all, you need to rent a suitable room. It is desirable that it consists of two rooms. One of them will be equipped as a workshop, and the second one will be used as a warehouse for finished products. The area of the room should be at least 40-50 square meters. meters.

At first, it is enough to buy:

  • Potter's wheel;
  • Device for kneading clay;
  • Scales;
  • Forms;
  • Furnace for roasting finished products;
  • In addition, you will need shelving with shelves for storing finished products.

Kilns for roasting are presented on the market in a wide range. They can be electric, gas or solid fuel. Such equipment can be made with your own hands, but in home-made furnaces it is almost impossible to achieve uniformity and high quality firing.

Business features

It is most profitable to open a pottery workshop in resort towns, which are often visited by tourists from different countries. In this case, your products will be in demand in the market. Of course, before starting work, you need to carefully analyze the market and study the level of competition. Many domestic manufacturers cannot compete with cheap Chinese products. But after all, this is a mass product that is not as interesting to consumers as individual developments. If you produce exclusive quality products, the demand for them will only grow.

When developing an assortment, you need to take into account that each region of the country has its own traditions and customs. You must learn to reflect them in ceramic products and their paintings. In this case, Chinese manufacturers will not be able to repeat your masterpieces. At first, you should not greatly expand the range. Limit yourself to the production of decorative and household utensils, souvenir magnets, vases and various pots. You should also not forget about such a profitable line of activity as holding master classes. Pottery is a profitable and quite promising business.

Raw material

Finding clay for pottery is not difficult. Using different processing methods, even poor quality raw materials can be brought back to normal. Usually clay lies under a small layer of earth, so you can extract it even on your own personal plot. But it is best to use clean, homogeneous material for sculpting.

To determine the suitability of raw materials, you need to roll a small bundle from moistened clay, as thick as a finger. After that, bend the tourniquet in half and check the bend for cracks. If there are few of them, you can safely use the material for modeling.

In order for the business to flourish, you need to find trusted suppliers of raw materials. Sometimes even reliable partners fail and supply low-quality material. Therefore, pay special attention to this important point. Another option where you can buy clay for pottery is the Internet. Here you can find raw materials of any quality at affordable prices. In addition, as mentioned above, you can get clay for modeling on your own. In this case, you will open, because you can significantly reduce the cost of production.

Technological process

The production of pottery is one of the most.

Such products can be made in different ways:

  • Free modeling. Various figurines, whistles and pots are molded from prepared clay;
  • Free formation is performed using a potter's wheel;
  • For plastic molding by hand, plaster molds are used.

For the manufacture of complex ceramic products, several molding methods are usually combined. To give the product an elegant look, it is treated with solutions of gold or silver, they use picturesque decoration with heat-resistant paints or the thinnest transparent film that shimmers in different colors. A very beautiful decoration is obtained from small pieces of colored glass. They are applied to the surface in the right places and the product is fired. Under the influence of high temperatures, the glass melts and spreads over the surface of the product, creating intricate patterns. You can create amazing original products from clay. A pottery workshop is enough, because the demand for ceramic products does not fall even during a crisis.

Sales of finished products

In order for pottery as a business to bring good profit, you need to find reliable distribution channels. Advertising will help you with this, as well as participation in art exhibitions and fairs. Entrepreneurs who work in large cities can sell finished products to souvenir shops located at airports and train stations, shopping centers, flower shops and other commercial enterprises.

If you are doing pottery at home, you can use another effective way that allows you to sell products in large volumes - this is the Internet. To organize online trading, it is enough to create your own online store. You can also find potential customers using auction sites.

Experienced businessmen advise beginners to take part in exhibitions and fairs as often as possible. Of course, transportation costs, entry fees and rental of exhibition equipment will significantly reduce your profits. But such social events will help you attract potential customers to your products.

Pay attention to the fact that the stand with your products is installed in a walk-through, well-lit place. Create a pleasant, friendly environment, offer customers products in different price ranges - all this attracts people and increases sales. Don't forget to order business cards to hand out to clients. Many visitors to the exhibition do not make purchases immediately. They select the appropriate options, after which they contact the seller and place a large order.

Business development

In addition to selling finished products, you can organize pottery training for beginners. Training courses or master classes, with the right approach, can become a fairly profitable line of business. Many people are interested in this kind of art, so they dream of learning pottery. The miraculous transformation of an ordinary piece of clay and an original jug or vase is a real pleasure. Therefore, there will be many who want to master this skill.

Recently, psychologists often recommend pottery therapy to their patients as one of the most effective methods in the treatment of severe depression. Also, pottery is a great option for people who can't find one. By the way, many companies offer master classes at customers' homes. This service is often ordered by schools and kindergartens.

An excellent option for an aspiring entrepreneur with creative potential would be to open your own pottery workshop. This, at first glance, non-obvious idea can be a worthy object for investing effort, money and time. How to implement this project, you will learn from this article.

business concept

Ceramics has been a companion of our everyday life since time immemorial and to this day does not go out of fashion. And the growing popularity of hand made products makes it even more relevant. Clay products can be very diverse - purely utilitarian or purely decorative. Dishes made on the potter's wheel: jugs, plates, mugs, dishes, etc. - can be used for their intended purpose or as decoration. You can make souvenirs, jewelry, decorative tiles, photo frames and much more from clay. If there is a sufficiently large assortment, there will be no shortage of potential buyers. There are also many options for selling products. You can sell products in bulk for subsequent sale through stores, make products to order, and put them up for sale in various souvenir shops. It is also possible to sell goods directly to customers - directly in the workshop or through your own shop or shop.

Various kinds of master classes are quite popular at present, including those on the manufacture of ceramic products. By equipping your workshop with additional tools and pottery wheels, as well as providing enough publicity to attract customers, it is quite possible to organize classes for everyone.

What is required for implementation?

You need a suitable space to work. It should not be large, but able to accommodate all the necessary equipment, materials and finished products. If you plan to conduct courses and master classes, then you should choose a room with a convenient location, as well as equip it with additional furniture and fixtures.

The main tools will be a potter's wheel, a clay kneading machine, scales and, perhaps, the most expensive element - a kiln for firing products. Finding material for modeling - clay - is not difficult.

Pottery wheels come in various designs (manual, foot, table, floor, mechanical, electric). Each master selects a circle individually, based on personal preferences and convenience.

For the production of standard products, such as souvenir magnets, it is convenient to use ready-made molds. This will speed up the process and get the same neat products.

At the initial stage, the entrepreneur himself can work in the workshop on his own or with one assistant. While the volume of work is small, it is quite possible to combine production and organizational work. However, as the business develops and the volume of work increases, additional staff will be required.

In no case should you neglect advertising. As in any other business, it is the engine of trade. The more potential clients and customers learn about the workshop, the more likely it is to succeed. One of the most effective channels today is the Internet. You can organize your own website and online store or use the services of existing resources.

To legalize entrepreneurial activities of this kind, it is advisable to open an IP.

Step by step start instructions

  1. Market analysis, study of competitors, demand for products, possible sales options.
  2. Drawing up a business plan and seeking funding.
  3. IP registration.
  4. Search and rental of premises (repair, if necessary).
  5. Selection and purchase of furniture and equipment, tools.
  6. Search for suppliers of raw materials and purchase of the first batch of working material.
  7. Advertising and promotion of a business project.

Financial calculations

A pottery workshop is a business that requires investment. An entrepreneur cannot do without initial costs, because funds will be required to rent premises, purchase equipment and materials for work.

The amount of start-up costs for each individual project will differ depending on the scale of the activity. As an example, consider the option of a small pottery workshop in which the entrepreneur works independently.

Start-up capital

The initial investment will include:

  • rent of premises - from 20 thousand rubles per month;
  • potter's wheel - from 30 thousand rubles;
  • kiln for firing products - from 40 thousand rubles;
  • clay mixing machine - from 30 thousand rubles;
  • scales - from 5 thousand rubles;
  • advertising - about 10 thousand rubles.

In total, the minimum amount required to open your own small pottery workshop will be 135 thousand rubles.

Monthly expenses

Monthly expenses will include rental payments for the premises and advertising costs, which together will amount to about 30 thousand rubles.

Payback periods

The pottery business can pay off in 4-5 months.

Business features

Opening a pottery workshop is one of those cases where a simple hobby can grow into your own financially successful project.

This type of activity is ideal for people who are passionate about working with clay. Otherwise, you will have to first master this craft or immediately hire professional craftsmen.

Just making pottery is not enough. It is necessary to first find out which of them will be in demand, otherwise the entrepreneur risks being left with unsold goods. The best option is to work on pre-order.

Outcome

Having your own pottery workshop is a good option for a novice entrepreneur, allowing you to realize your creative potential and receive a stable income. The risks associated with such a business are minimal, and relatively small amounts of financial costs allow you to start operating almost immediately.

Alexey Belousov and Alyona Shoiko from Novosibirsk sold their car to buy a clay kiln. Such an "exchange" opened the way for them to their own ceramics workshop - so they have never regretted the car since then. As well as the fact that they left their jobs and became entrepreneurs. The founders of the Formo studio told the Biz360 portal about how to stand out from the competition and why the focus was not on the production of products, but on training.

26 years; , 32 years; entrepreneurs from Novosibirsk, founders of a pottery workshop Formo. Alena graduated from the Siberian Academy of Public Administration (Department of Psychology), Aleksey graduated from the University of Consumer Cooperatives (specialty "anti-crisis management"). The Formo workshop opened in October 2017.

Sold the car, bought a stove

Alexey Belousov had never thought before that he would become a potter. Prior to that, he was engaged in various projects in completely different areas - from marketing campaigns to creating his own franchise. But Alena Shoiko dreamed of ceramics since childhood. It was she who convinced Alexei to open a workshop.

“I always studied everything I could find about ceramics, then I got into a children's circle and stayed there for an indecently long time - I became too old for the circle, but I still went. I was able to work on the potter's wheel only a few years ago. She studied privately and immediately with a serious goal - to place her hands correctly. Then she worked as a pottery teacher herself, and then I had my own circle. And since I put it at home, Alexey, of course, tried it - and also fell in love with this activity. Now he has practiced so much that he will give me a head start. And it’s great, after all, potter is a male profession.”

“For a long time my life was connected with computers. In the end, I decided that I wanted to move from virtual to something real, tangible, - Alexey explains. “If I was primarily interested in money, I would hardly have taken up pottery - this is not the most profitable business in the world.”

At the same time, entry into this not the most profitable business today is not cheap. The main tool of the ceramist - a kiln for firing clay products - cost the beginners from Novosibirsk 250 thousand rubles. Another 80 thousand cost a potter's wheel. To buy a stove, Alena and Alexei sold the car.

“In the Papa Johns pizzeria, next to our workshop, there is a poster that says that the creator sold his favorite car to open his own business and buy the first oven. This phrase amused us, because we had a similar story, - says Alexey. – I must say, we were lucky: we managed to buy equipment of a very high level, although it is usually difficult to find such models on the secondary market. At one time, we also acquired our car by accident on favorable terms. We then doubted whether we needed it at all. But, as it turned out now, if it weren’t for the car, there wouldn’t be a stove - and a workshop.”

“It was immediately clear to us that investing in equipment is an investment in the future,” Alena adds. “Therefore, we did not try to get by with a home-made wheel and oven, as some novice potters do, but immediately bought high-quality ones.”

"I'm shaping", "we're shaping"...

At first, Alyona and Alexey were going to make a workshop for personal creativity. Therefore, the stove was sent to the balcony, and the potter's wheel settled in the room of their apartment. But it soon became clear that it was inconvenient to live like that. “It's not just about the equipment. You also need to order clay (you can’t buy it in Novosibirsk, so we take it in Spain and Ukraine). It is always necessary to order in large volumes, and then store it somewhere, ”explains Alena.

They began to look for a separate area for the stove - and as a result, they came to the Formo space with master classes in clay modeling. It is they who today occupy 70% of the working time of Alexei and Alena - and singled them out against the background of other similar organizations.

Before ceramics, Alena was a photographer for six years, and also taught dances, various types of needlework and, in fact, pottery. Alexey also had experience in design and photography. All of this ended up being very useful in their new business.

“My education as a psychologist also helped. After all, I communicate with people a lot now, but here you can’t do without psychology, ”says Alena.

The name came to the mind of novice masters by chance: from the word "shaping". “Education” in this context is associated with master classes, and the word formo in Portuguese means “to be formed”. In addition to the semantic load, the name of the workshop also sounds modern and international.

According to Aleksey, few competing workshops paid due attention to the name - and in vain. It can play a big role in business scaling. In particular, when entering the federal and international level with its products.

Loft Residents

There are a number of special requirements for placing under a ceramic workshop - first of all, in terms of fire safety. You won't go to the office center with such a project. However, Alexey and Alena were lucky again: pretty soon they found a site in the Novosibirsk Loft-Nsk loft in the city center. Formo started out on about 30 square meters and is now spread over 50.

The place required serious renovation. Basically, Alexei did it himself. So from a production room with ventilation shafts and openings for elevators, a workshop turned out.

“It was scary to launch: it seemed to us that no one would come to the opening, except for our friends,” Alena admits. - But in the end, the loft itself provided us with informational support. Plus, the information spread on social networks. We did not launch any special advertising there for the opening - we just hung an announcement. As a result, there weren’t many acquaintances at the opening, but mostly strangers came.”

Entrepreneurs immediately began to offer master classes, which turned out to be in demand. Almost from the very opening, a large flow of people went to Formo, and so far entrepreneurs have not encountered any downtime. “Also, we immediately began to receive orders for dishes from Novosibirsk companies,” says Alexey. “So we started both work with training sessions and sculpting to order at the same time.”

Dates and birthdays with clay

Formo lessons take at least 100 kg of clay per month, it is ordered from various suppliers in Spain and Ukraine. At the master classes, Aleksey and Alyona give students a chance to try different modeling techniques (by hand and on the potter's wheel) and applying glazes (dipping, watering, spraying). The main goal of the creators of the studio is that the guests get quality work, not children's crafts. After the class, the items are fired, so that the participants then take home the finished ceramics of their own production.

There are days in the schedule of master classes for a week when you can come and sculpt on a free topic, and there are at least three group thematic classes in hand modeling. Individual pottery master classes are also held every day (in the near future, group classes on the circle will also be held in the studio). Sculpting on a free topic is paid on time: 400 rubles per hour for an adult, 300 for a child. A lesson on the potter's wheel for one person will cost 800 rubles, for a couple - 1200.

At the same time, 12 people can attend a group master class. But if necessary, the number can be increased to 30 (for example, for a corporate party). “The advantage of our loft is that we can rent additional space and hold classes for a large audience,” says Alexey. “As far as I know, this is also one of our competitive advantages: many other studios do not have such an opportunity.”

Families and couples often come to Formo - especially for a lesson called "A date for the potter's wheel". Also among the visitors are people who are simply interested in self-development and they attend many courses and classes. In addition, the workshop has a service for children's birthday parties.

Greek Cup

As for their products, for now this direction is developing in the workshop rather according to the residual principle - when there is time left free from teaching others. Alexey and Alena's products can now only be bought in their small showroom at Formo.

Basically they create dishes. “Before the New Year, we tried to participate with our products in the market. And even about the very popular decorative garnet in the world of ceramics, people asked - how can it be used? That is, it is applied items that are in great demand, - Alena states. - Crockery is interesting. Jewelry and figurines can be made from many other materials. And the dishes are mostly only made of clay.”

For the next year, the creators of Formo are planning to develop the direction of their production and establish online sales. Hopes are pinned on Instagram: according to Alexei, ceramics are selling well there. Today, it is there and on VKontakte that the studio is moving forward. Plus, the masters are going to open their own online store.

“While we are working together, we only have time for content for our main Instagram profile. And time to practice and ceramic profile for sale, not enough, - says Alena. So for the time being, we only take orders from time to time. But we already have a growing team, so we will develop this direction soon.”

Nevertheless, among these rare commissioned works, Formo masters already have a foreign one. Recently, a musical group came to Novosibirsk, in which the keyboardist was from Greece. And this man from the homeland of pottery, where there are entire villages of ceramists, ordered a cup from Formo. He collects them: he buys one in every city he visits.

There will be more potters

According to Aleksey, his studio not only has competitors, but, most likely, there will be more. However, Formo has already reached a leading position in the city, because the studio was heavily invested at every stage of work.

“There are people who have worked for us for years, and yet in many ways we have become pioneers,” says Alexey. - For example, not every workshop has a brand, but we tried to make it; Not everyone even has a website. We launched your website. Let it be a C for now, but it’s better to do it that way than to keep the perfect one in your head and not do it at all. ”

Entrepreneurs say they are lucky that they know how to teach, that is, to train personnel themselves: in the near future they intend to expand the teaching staff. This is necessary to launch full-fledged courses in ceramics - for those who want not just to try themselves, but to learn this business. Subsequently, the creators of Formo also plan to develop coworking in their space.

“If you look at the Internet, it may seem that ceramics has become very popular and there are even too many offers,” summed up Alena. - But if we talk about specific cities, in reality it is not so. New studios in our city will certainly appear again.”

“Novosibirsk is big, and the potters in it today can be counted on the fingers – that's why everyone has clients,” Alexey adds.

Equipment for a pottery workshop

Promotion: Profi-Max-M potter's wheel for 28900 rubles. (when buying from 6 circles at a time)!

Dear friends, lovers of pottery, colleagues!

My name is Andrey Kudryavtsev. Since 2001 I have been a manufacturer pottery equipment, namely:

Price list (prices) for pottery equipment

During this time, I gained vast experience in the manufacture of potter's wheels (6 models were produced), eliminated all the "roughness" of their designs.

We constantly work on all this equipment ourselves and produce ceramics to order.

Many of you are tormented by the question: what kind of potter's wheel to choose for making clay products, where and how best to buy it? After all, now a lot of pottery wheels have appeared on the market, ranging from children's toy ones to large, monstrous, imported and domestic (although all domestic circles are either clones of Chinese / Japanese or my circles).

Probably, first of all, you are interested in the price of a potter's wheel and its quality, i.e. manufacturer. Everything is clear with the price, if only coins ring in the wallet and no rustling is heard, then we choose what is cheaper. But as experience shows, what is "cheaper" quickly becomes unusable, does not meet the requirements of the buyer, and is simply dangerous in operation (the engine is not isolated from the structure, 220 volts on the pedals, sharp corners tear women's tights, etc.).

How to choose the right manufacturer of pottery wheels?

  • Ask how long this manufacturer has been producing pottery wheels on the Russian market. A year, two or more than 10 years? After all, the statute of limitations can tell a lot, for example, about the quality of potter's wheels, about how often they needed to be repaired.
  • Is it possible to contact the manufacturer directly and discuss technical issues. It is very important when a manufacturer treats his creation with soul and worries about every lap made, knows all its tricks and nuances and is ready to answer any question.
  • Is it possible to quickly replace spare parts for this pottery equipment. It's no secret that it's easier, faster and cheaper to replace a part made in Russia than abroad. Find out who was the buyer of pottery wheels from this manufacturer.
  • The best indicator is satisfied customers who have been using these pottery wheels for more than one year and recommend them to their friends and acquaintances.

Why is it profitable to buy an electric potter's wheel and other pottery equipment from us?

  • You will buy pottery equipment from us, directly from the manufacturer, bypassing the chain of intermediaries. Thus, you will significantly save your budget.
  • Our task is to produce high-quality pottery equipment for you. After all, our reputation and demand for products depend on it. Unlike an intermediary, for which the main goal is to resell someone else's goods at a higher price.
  • You can always contact me and get competent advice on working with the potter's wheel, get technical and informational support.
  • The potter's wheel comes with a DVD with a training film "Basics of working on the potter's wheel". This is the same educational film, which is still the ONLY educational video in Russia, was released back in 2005. Thus, you can learn pottery at home without attending additional, sometimes very expensive, courses. Well, if you consider it necessary to improve your skills with a master potter - welcome to study with us! For wholesale and regular customers we provide discounts and bonuses.
  • We have experience in completing turnkey pottery workshops. Especially for you, we can prepare a project for a pottery workshop in full compliance with the requirements of the Ministry of Emergency Situations and the SES.

    About pottery

    There are materials that have been used by people a long time ago in various crafts. These include clay for modeling, which is used in pottery. Although now clay is kneaded (as the potters say, “educated”) with the help of machines, and not manually, and pottery machines have also become electric, in general, these differences are very small, pottery is incredibly similar to the craft that people have been doing for thousands of years.

    How to master pottery

    In general, this work is a physical labor that requires a certain skill and experience. In many ways, such work can be compared with the activities of a turner or miller, although it has its own specifics.

    Thus, in order to become a potter, you will need to be trained by another potter or learn the craft yourself from textbooks. By the way, unlike plumbing and milling, pottery is not taught in technical schools and similar educational institutions, such an activity is not in high demand.

    At the same time, at specialized courses you can learn to be a potter:

    get the required artistic skill;

    understand how to work with clay;

    learn how to work on modern machines that are used in pottery;

    make your first products;

    understand how to create ceramic objects not only for yourself, but also for sale.

    Of course, depending on the courses, the training has certain differences. However, in general, similar skills and abilities are taught. After such training, you will be able to continue to create objects from clay at a more or less professional level.

    What is pottery for?

    In fact, for many people, this craft becomes a hobby that allows you to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, get positive emotions and make beautiful objects. Indeed, it is possible to fashion a wide variety of objects from clay that will always come in handy in the household, and working with clay is pleasant and exciting.

    In addition, some people start making money in pottery, and this option is also quite possible. Moreover, handmade products are popular. These products are not very popular and are not needed on an industrial scale, but in almost every city a potter will be able to find customers interested in purchasing ceramic products.

    • Do-it-yourself wicker rugs For a long time, people have strived to be surrounded by beautiful things. To do this, he is constantly in search of new inventions. Weaving can be attributed to the most ancient craft, which

    • Forged items: original and extraordinary decor items Today, innovative technologies are used for metal processing. Unique interior items are in great demand among the population of Moscow and other cities.
    • Do-it-yourself dishes Modern man, just like his distant ancestors, from time to time tries to create something on his own with his own hands. It can be a variety of crafts. Including utensils.
    • Modeling a decorative saucer on a potter's wheel Modeling, or rather molding on a potter's wheel, is a very ancient way of making ceramic products. The invention of the potter's wheel was a huge impetus for the development of ceramic production,

    Tested on myself. We took pottery classes and found out why they are so popular.

    It is necessary to hit it well, it will be more pliable, - says the potter Andrey Savitsky and then backhand beats a piece of clay lying on the table with his fist. After this, not only clay - anyone will become complaisant. So the future jug - but for now, an unsightly gray lump - is already obedient and plastic. In a couple of minutes, under the skillful hands of Andrei, he takes shape - the spectacle captures no less than the show of illusionists.

    Making ceramics with your own hands is a hobby for sophisticated natures

    Only here without deceit and tricks - everything is extremely honest, sleight of hand and no fraud! All you need is a potter's wheel, clay, some water and patience.

    “Everyone can learn this,” Andrey assures. – Watch the work of other masters, imitate and try to sculpt yourself. It is useless to talk about it, you need to watch and do.

    So we decided to test ourselves - what if it works? But I had to wait for this lesson for several months. There are so many applicants that in May we were only able to sign up for July.
    Eight people attended. All beginners, and almost all with open mouths, are watching the work of the guru. Andrey Savitsky is an experienced, hereditary potter. He has been professionally engaged in ceramics for more than twenty years, and he first picked up clay in his unconscious childhood. But even the master himself complains: she can be so capricious that sometimes he throws her into a corner for a couple of days, “educates”. What can we say about us!

    The circle is spinning, the hands are in the mud up to the elbow, and the nondescript lump remains a lump, no matter how you turn it. Nothing works, the clay is softened and spreads. Manicure died: under the nails such horror, as if dug without gloves a few acres in the country. But it’s hard to call it torment - the work causes pleasant sensations. Maybe that's why it's so hard to sign up for a pottery class? It's almost like yoga: you create, relax and understand that in order to achieve something, you need patience and diligence. Just don't tense your muscles.

    “The main thing is to feel the clay, find a common language with it,” explains Savitsky. -
    It is a living being, and you are helping it to take shape, to be reborn. She leads you. It happens that you are going to make a vase, but it turns out a bottle.

    An hour later, instead of the intended tea cup, a small vase appears. And my neighbor Maria, a big coffee lover, does get a milk jug. Does the clay reflect our own desires?

    Andrew smiles slyly.

    – Working with clay is a psychotherapy, like any other art. he says. -
    But pottery is also attractive because it especially feels the connection with the ancestors. It's one of the oldest arts!

    Finally, our products are ready - they are on the shelf, ready to be fired. Exactly the same people sculpted at the dawn of civilization. Maybe someday, centuries later, archaeologists will find my vase?

The third, which is possible under the assumption that you yourself know how to work with clay and creative imagination, will not be considered. Because in this case you are one hundred percent savvy and do not need advice.

    So, firstly, you can start from scratch, with start-up capital, purchase the necessary equipment, arrange for the supply of materials and find a few ceramists who will be happy to work for you. The first investment in the workshop will not be too ruinous, provided that you have suitable premises for work.

    You will need approximately $15,000 to purchase the following equipment:

    • kilns for roasting;
    • clay kneading machine;
    • Potter's wheel;
    • clay dosing scales;
    • casting molds.

    If you intend to create a unique production, entirely built by your own hands, but are not very familiar with pottery, listen carefully to your colleagues who earn their living from this. Furnaces and other things should be chosen by specialists, they do not have to be new at all, the main thing is the quality of firing.

    Secondly, you can negotiate with those who have their own pottery workshop and invest in the development of the business. Or just give your orders for execution. This approach will half kill the author's approach, since the author will not be engaged in manufacturing, but it is very convenient if you rely on consumer goods.

    Pottery, its advantages

    This type of business is good because it allows you to maintain flexibility and the ability to adapt to new customer requests. You can both produce products that are simply useful in the household, and claim the author's exclusive. And depending on consumer demand, increase or cut down one or another production line.

    Pottery is always at the peak of popularity. The technology of their manufacture has not changed for several thousand years. Even materials such as glass, metal or plastic could not influence the popularity of these products. Since demand constantly exceeds supply, pottery can become a promising direction for creating a small and quite profitable business.

Thanks to this, you do not have to keep accounting records and fill out tax returns.

    room

    To organize pottery production at home, you need a small room with an area of 50 square meters. meters. In addition, it is necessary to allocate a separate area for a warehouse, with an area of 15 sq. meters. There you will store the finished product.

    It is desirable that the pottery workshop be located on the first floor of the building. As for communications, the premises must have electricity, sewerage and running water. Also, do not forget about air conditioning and ventilation.

    In addition, you will need:

    • Scales;

    Before purchasing equipment, it is necessary to study the special literature in order to familiarize yourself with some important nuances.

    Do not immediately buy new equipment. Sometimes you can find used pottery equipment in excellent condition through advertisements in newspapers and the Internet.

    Staff

    If you have an irresistible desire, as well as a certain amount of perseverance, you can perform all production processes on your own. But it is much more efficient to use hired labor.

    Income

    Pottery almost always finds its buyers. To organize the sale of finished products, you can take it for sale in supermarkets or souvenir shops. This is not the most profitable way, so you should try hard to become a regular supplier of a large souvenir chain. In this case, the volume of one batch of products will be at least 1000 pieces.

    It is worth noting that pottery as a business brings good profits. To increase income, you can open training courses at the workshop. Many modern people who are tired of the daily hustle and bustle are happy to be creative. You can also organize refresher courses. In this case, you will have to purchase additional equipment for pottery production and consumables.

    In addition, you can engage in the manufacture of pottery to order. Large companies often order large quantities of souvenirs with their logo or symbols. The pottery business will be successful if you choose a competent pricing policy. For regular wholesale buyers it is necessary to provide a special system of discounts.

    Purchase of raw materials

    It is important to know that clay for pottery production can be of different varieties - white, red, and also with lime or sand impurities.

    Before you start purchasing equipment, decide what kind of clay you will be working with. The choice of equipment and its cost largely depend on this.

    Experienced potters mostly use red clay. The most important thing is that it contains a little lime. Experts advise finding one specific place where you can constantly take raw materials. It is desirable that the clay be oily and contain no more than 1% metal oxide. You can learn about the deposits of such material from local geologists or local historians.

    Features of pottery

    Before you start sculpting, you need to prepare the mixture. The traditional technology of pottery production involves squeezing air bubbles out of the clay. That is, the mixture must be thoroughly interrupted. To do this, the workpiece must be rolled up several times on a wooden board. With the help of a wire, it is cut into pieces and thrown against the table with force. After that, the workpiece must be twisted several times in a spiral. This is a very important process, on which the number of marriages largely depends.

    Many aspiring entrepreneurs are interested in how to learn pottery? The most important thing is to be patient, because this art requires a long polishing of skill. If something does not work out for you, do not be upset. Think of those potters who worked several thousand years ago. They did not have special equipment and literature from which to draw the necessary knowledge, but, despite this, they created real masterpieces.

    Summing up

    Nowadays, finding courses in pottery is not difficult. Therefore, having a desire, you can easily master this profession.

    Experts recommend not to turn your apartment into a workshop. Use for this cottage, garage or rent a room. Otherwise, you will pollute all the rooms, burn the wiring, clog the sewers and, as a result, quarrel with all the neighbors.

    The pottery workshop will bring good profit if you have a large enough number of customers. After you settle organizational and production issues, immediately look for reliable distribution channels.

    Use advertising for this, and also take part in various art exhibitions. Offer souvenirs to small shops in the city center, at train stations and airports. If you take into account all these recommendations, the pottery workshop will become a profitable and promising business.
