Stuck filter in the washing machine. What to do if the oil filter does not unscrew

Proper car care extends its life. Maintenance of the machine includes changing the engine oil and filter. The procedure is not difficult, even for a novice motorist. An article will help to understand, which describes how to unscrew the oil filter, why and when to change it.

Why might this be needed?

Many motorists do not understand the reasons for replacing the oil filter when lubrication changes. The engine is the heart of the car, it is subject to the greatest wear, as it accounts for the main load. Foreign particles are contained in the engine fluid that adversely affects the operation of the motor. An oil filter is designed to screen these particles. The more it is worn out, the worse the quality of the lubricant becomes, and this, in turn, affects the wear of the motor.

Determining the suitability of the oil filter is not possible in appearance. In terms of mileage, it is also difficult to draw conclusions about the need for replacement. The filter element works constantly, even when the engine is idling, so its wear does not depend on mileage, but on engine hours. Some drivers, when changing oil, neglect replacing the filter element, considering it unnecessary.

It is important when choosing a product for replacement to focus not on its appearance, but on the content. Drivers with an aggressive driving style are better off installing expensive products. This is due to the fact that during fast driving, sudden braking or acceleration, the engine requires a large amount of oil. In expensive filters, synthetic elements are installed that can withstand loads, high temperatures that allow you to quickly drive away the oil. Analogs have felt-based elements through which a lubricant passes longer than through a synthetic material. These products are suitable for lovers of a quiet ride.

How and how can this be done?

There are cases when the oil filter is difficult to remove. The reason for this may be the previous replacement, when the filter element was screwed too tightly during installation and it became attached. The second reason is insufficient space to remove the element, the inability to use special tools. There are various ways to unscrew the oil filter:

  1. The easiest way is to buy a ready-made special key. Depending on the free space, they tear off the corresponding puller, they are of the following types:

They can be bought in specialized stores. They are inexpensive and will relieve the difficulties of removing for many years.

How to remove the oil filter?

Often, when changing an oil in a car, the question unexpectedly comes to the fore is how to remove the old oil filter. It would seem that there is nothing complicated in this matter - the filter needs only to be unscrewed and removed. But everything happens so simply only in theory, but in fact it sometimes turns out that the filter is tightened so tight that it is impossible to unscrew it by hand. In this situation, you can solve a problem that suddenly arises in two ways - drive the car to the service station and change the oil there, or try to unscrew the filter yourself.

How to unscrew the oil filter

There are several ways to remove the oil filter, we will talk about everything in order.

The first method - the most affordable and cheapest

As mentioned above, first you need to try to unscrew the oil filter by hand through a rag. It’s easier to break the filter from a dead point on an still warm engine: after the engine cools down, it will be much more difficult to do. If the filter refuses to turn, you can replace the rag with a piece of sandpaper for better grip. In the event that this does not help, proceed to the following methods.

The second method is the most effective, but quite expensive

It is easy to unscrew even a seemingly “tightly attached” filter using a special device that you must first buy in the car shop. Such special pullers come in two types - chain and crab. If you decide to spend your money on the purchase of such a device, buy a chain puller better, it is more powerful, reliable and fits any type of filter, so at most service stations oil filters are twisted with chain keys

The third method is barbaric, but effective

You no longer need the old filter anymore, so it can be completely damaged. Punch the filter through the side with a powerful screwdriver and, acting like a screwdriver, tear it from its place and rotate the attached filter.

The fourth method - using a homemade removable device

Such a removable device can be built from an old (but still whole) generator belt. It is best to use a belt from the classic Lada model for these purposes. Fold the belt ring in half and you will get half loops on both sides. Pull one of them into the other and slightly tighten. As a result of this manipulation, you will have a double self-tightening loop in your hands. Throw it on the filter and pull the loose half-loop towards you with all your strength. The harder you pull, the more the loop around the filter will compress. Keep pulling it to the side, and when it is finally tightened, the filter will begin to turn.

The importance of replacing the oil filter is known to every driver who independently serves the car and strives to keep the engine in good condition. Each oil change is accompanied by the process of replacing the oil filter and other consumables. It is impossible to save on oil filters, otherwise metal chips (formed due to engine wear), dirt and other debris will fall into the engine with oil, which can lead to the failure of expensive parts.

The process of replacing the oil filter is quite simple. The driver needs to remove the old filter and install a new one in its place. However, there are situations when the oil filter does not unscrew. What to do in such cases will be considered in the framework of this article.

Why the oil filter is not unscrewed

To unscrew the old oil filter, it is necessary to put the machine in a hole or to lift it with the help of a lift. After this, it is necessary to unscrew the consumable element, but this may cause difficulties. If the old oil filter does not loosen, this occurs for the following reasons:

It is important that the filter is not located in the most convenient place, and it becomes impossible to apply maximum physical strength. In addition, when working, the hands are in oil, which causes slippage when trying to unscrew the filter element.

Which direction is the oil filter unscrewed

When problems arise in unscrewing the oil filter, the driver may be haunted by doubts as to which direction the element needs to be unscrewed. These doubts must be discarded because it is generally accepted that the oil filter is unscrewed counterclockwise. That is, grasping the filter, it must be turned to the left, as any standard nut or bolt is unscrewed (if you do not take into account elements with a reverse thread).

The oil filter does not loosen: what to do

If the oil filter cannot be unscrewed independently, you can offer to try to do this to a person who has more strength. In most cases, you can unscrew even a very “sticky” oil filter without unnecessary tricks. But when it is not possible to unscrew an element even with outside help, you can use one of the methods described below:

Please note: Some drivers recommend not hammering through the filter with a hammer, but hammering a screwdriver into the area of \u200b\u200bthe mount. To do this in a rather dangerous way, since by chance a screwdriver can slip off and pierce the elements of the engine.

Some of us have garages, if there is a pit in it, then this is almost 100% of the conditions for doing regular maintenance. This is replacing the engine oil, replacing the air and oil filters, and the cabin filter itself, if necessary. These are prerequisites for routine maintenance. Let's just say - many save on maintenance and do not change the air filter (although I think this is not correct), but the oil filter must be changed! BUT there is a big problem - if it is tightly twisted, then it is very difficult to unscrew it! How easy it is to do it yourself, today a little instruction ...

Indeed, the guys I personally encountered such a problem on my FORD, the oil filter was so tightly twisted that it was practically impossible to wrap it around with my hands - EC, and then I suffered. The main causes of this problem:

  • When changing the oil, the filter was tightened well; many services do this with special keys.
  • He stuck with time. This also happens, high temperatures, and getting a little oil on the gasket, just “stick” it to the engine.

Actually, these are the main two reasons, in any case, you climbed to unscrew it - it does not lend itself, the inconvenient location complicates this process (as a rule, it is below, almost under the engine). Also, often hands (or gloves) are already in oil, so unscrewing is even more difficult, it simply slides on the surface.

Why can not I leave the old filter?

A very common question is all because when the engine is running, chips are formed (commonplace wear), also the oil burns, gets dirty, and dust can also get inside. All this “business” settles precisely on the filter (on its cleaning paper surface). If you want, the filter is the "motor liver." If it weren’t, then engine wear would be much faster (scientists counted up to 5 times).

For a service life of 10 - 15 000 km, it becomes clogged almost completely, and leaving it to work with new oil is NOT possible! ALWAYS install a new filter element. Trite will not be enough oil pressure, and the engine will suffer from.

So the air filters are not so critical (although I think they also need to be changed), and unscrewing them is very simple. But the oil change is MANDATORY.

In which direction to unscrew

Those who can’t unscrew, they begin to look for information - but in what direction is he unscrewed? Maybe I'm just not twisting it? CAN!

But the filter element is unscrewed - that is, like many of all nuts, with normal (not reverse) thread. So if it does not, you need to resort to special methods, about them below.

How to unscrew if attached?

I will tell you several ways that will 100% help you unscrew this element, well, let's go:

  • Trite hands . Often you just don’t have enough strength, just call the person “more powerful” and everything can work out. I will say this in 80% of cases unscrew by hand. YES and spin it again with your hands tightly! IT'S ENOUGH!

  • Special key . I already wrote about him once, you can, of course, not always at hand, but if you have a friend by car, you can drive to almost any parts store and purchase it. I personally have even seen in several supermarkets, the cost of a penny is about 200 - 300 rubles. With him, everything is quite easy and simple, we hook and unscrew, of course, the body of the element will be remembered, but in fact we don’t need it anymore.

  • Rope and screwdriver (other lever) . Sometimes they still use the old alternator belt or timing belt. What we do, we twist the loop around the filter, pull it with a screwdriver, tightly. And try to unscrew. The main thing is that the rope or belt does not slip.

  • Hammer and a long and durable screwdriver . Actually this method unscrews most of the non-filter elements. Since the walls of the element are soft, it is usually aluminum, or tin, and other soft metals. It is very easy to break through (just like a tin can). What we do is drive a long and strong screwdriver through and through, that is, to go on one side and come out on the other. And then unscrew as a lever. The most important thing is that everything can be done without a special key, and actually with the use of those tools that are always in the garage. Less - only dirty hands, because part of the oil is always inside.

  • Hammer and chisel . This is generally a method that says “ATAS”, there’s nothing to explain here, we take a chisel and “crap” it with a hammer, the most important thing is to hit closer to the bottom, to the attachment point, and counterclockwise. The case, of course, will be completely rumpled, but the most important thing is to unscrew. The downside here is not only that you can be smeared, but also that you can touch the engine block with a chisel, I personally advise you with a screwdriver method, yet it is less dangerous.

As you see, nothing complicated, you can do without a special key, just breaking through the case with a screwdriver.

Now we are watching a small video.

And that's all for me, read our AUTOBlog.

The oil filter in the car changes every 10-20 thousand kilometers with. The use of the latter is not mandatory, however, you cannot unscrew this filter with your hands. This is due to burnt oil that has fallen under the thread during operation of the part. What if there is no such key in your garage and time for shopping too? - Use other methods, unscrew the oil filter, since there are a sufficient number of them.

Method number 1.

To implement it, you need a long screwdriver. Poke the oil filter through it, and then tear it off with strong smooth (not sharp!) Movements and just unscrew it by hand.

In doing so, always remember the following:

  • it is necessary to pierce the filter through the entire body, since if a puncture is made on only one side of it, you cannot remove the part, but only mutilate it;
  • during the puncture, oil may spill over you through the holes made - be prepared for this.

Method number 2.

Provides removal of the oil filter with a leather belt or rope.

The method itself is quite simple and in its essence imitates the action of a special key, which was discussed at the very beginning of this article.

1 Take a wide belt (made of leather or its substitute) or a rope, make a loop out of it and tighten it on the filter counterclockwise.

  1. With a sharp jerk, twist the part to be disassembled.
  2. If this did not work out - due to the slipping of the belt - just put sandpaper inside the loop and repeat the steps.

Method number 3.

It is essentially an analogue of method No. 2, just instead of a rope and a belt, the belt of a VAZ classic generator is used - it is inexpensive, does not slip and is very convenient to use.

Method number 4.

Here, the only condition is the presence of a large engine compartment, and the main operating tool is a large gas key. Just twist the “stuck” part with it, but be careful!

When capturing, the key damages the filter housing, so there is always a risk of splashing oil, and given that the grease drains when the engine is warmed up and the work is done on a viewing hole (overpass), this can be very dangerous.

Method number 5.

It involves the use of a homemade tool to remove the oil filter, the principle of operation of which is similar to a special chain puller, but first you need to do this tool.

Take a small segment of the bicycle chain (for VAZ cars the ideal size is 30 links) and connect it into the ring with a regular lock or riveting. In an old or simply unnecessary socket head at 22 or 19, make a cut equal to the width of this chain and insert one into the other. For convenience, insert the extension cord or ratchet into the connecting square of the head and unscrew the oil filter using this tool counterclockwise.

Method number 6.

When none of the options presented above unscrew the oil filter without a key, could not solve your problem or the case of this part is too damaged, make a notch on the filter, install a chisel on it and knock down the part with the hammer blows, after which the filter can easily be manually rolled up.

What to do next?

When the old filter is dismantled, before installing a new one in its place, be sure to wipe the place of attachment with a rag, pour oil into the filter itself, not forgetting to lubricate it and the rubber gasket. Only then can the new part be considered ready for installation. Screw it to the seat (you don’t need to exert much effort for this), turn on the ignition and let the engine warm up, and watch the repair site yourself. If everything is done correctly, oil from the filter will not ooze.
